A man has shared the ridiculously strict list of rules his sister gave him after she asked him to move in with her.
He explained that when his sister, 22, asked him, 20, to move in with her, he was well and truly up for it at first.
He said that she had a nice house and assumed that rent probably wouldn’t be too expensive either.
But, he didn’t agree right away.
He told her he’d have to think about it and would like to know some vital details beforehand, such as prices for rent, internet, gas, water and electricity bills, and how much he would have to pitch in for general shopping items.
But when she laid down her strict house rules, he quickly reconsidered.
The list of house rules she put in place were:
- No eating or drinking – unless using a bottle – in the bedroom
- No mess in the bedroom
- Must not go out every night – stay home some nights
- Can’t bring the guys home all the time – only sometimes
- Must chip in with her dog cleaning chores
- Must be the driver if they need to go shopping
- Must cook the meals – if they’re having the same one
“After reading that, I was like wtf,” he wrote. “I told her I won’t be moving in somewhere to be parented, if I want to bring guys home I will, I won’t be loud though because I’m considerate that others are in the house.
“If I want to have a friend over, I don’t need to ask, and I can eat whatever I want to, etc etc. She goes to me ‘is that how you think it works everywhere?’ To which I said yes.
“I’m a law student, so I sent her some laws that showed what she’s asking of me is illegal, as she’ll be my legal landlord and having those requirements aren’t legal for a landlord to ask.
“While rules are obvious, every house has them, the general gist of the laws where I live are as long as you’re not damaging the property, as long as you’re paying the rent on time, there’s not much else a landlord can require of someone – they can deny anyone living there for whatever reason, but they can’t tell you what you’re allowed to do in that space.”
He also then added that rules may be different depending on the area people live in.
“She wasn’t impressed, and started to ignore me,” he added. “But I wasn’t having it, that’s why I sent her some laws about what she’s doing.
“I told my mum, and she told me that I was out of line and I should just follow my sister’s household rules because we’re family.”
He asked Reddit users for advice on whether he was in the wrong, and nearly all of them agreed that he shouldn’t move in with his sister.
One person said: “Her rules are ridiculous and sending her the law was a perfect response.”
And another agreed: “Sounds like your sister wanted a maid who was paying to live with her. You’d have to be the driver on grocery runs? Share responsibility of her dog?
“I think you handled it perfectly. Def don’t move in with her. Good thing you asked the right questions and found out before you did. Good lord, can you imagine!?”
However one said: “Its weird to have sent her the laws? Like just say no thats whack, I won’t be moving in.”
