There were so many components to the Rays’ Game 4 walk-off win Saturday night that even 20 minutes later, fans were finding new details to admire.
Career .202 hitter Brett Phillips pulled a single into right-center field with two outs and two strikes in the ninth inning before chaos ensued. An outfield bobble, a ludicrous baserunning decision and a missed gather at home plate from Dodgers catcher Will Smith combined to allow not only the tying run cross the plate, but also the winning one.
Tampa Bay evened the best-of-seven series 2-2 with the 8-7 victory.
MLB fans reacted in several ways, some focusing on the unlikely hit by Phillips and others paying mind to the brutal defeat for a Dodgers team that’s fallen short in the Fall Classic twice before since 2017. Randy Arozarena’s dicey decision to round third when he probably should have held up also drew social media commentary.
Here are some of the Twitter responses to everything that happened during Tampa Bay’s winning play:
An underrated part of that ending is Willy Adames just jumping over Arozarena to go celebrate in the outfield. Arozarena got no love. pic.twitter.com/y7SXkl824p

Rays manager Kevin Cash on Brett Phillips: “He’s constantly smiling. Laughing all the time. Hopefully we don’t get him laughing too hard to where he passes out.”
Brandon Lowe: “Nothing can prepare you for it.

A friendly reminder that Brett Phillips went to Rays fan fest with his grandma back in 1998 when the Rays first came to Saint Pete.
If anyone deserved that, it’s him.
