Cherry Pie and Coffee group has pie, St. Pat’s fun
CHERRY — The next “Cherry Pie and Coffee” get-together will be 1:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Cherry Church Hall. It’s open to the public, young and old and will have a St. Patrick’s Day theme. The group meets on the first tuesday monthly.

La Salle County Retired Teachers meet, hear history from Steve Stout
OTTAWA — La Salle County Retired Teachers’ Association held their winter general membership mini-meeting and breakfast at Sunfields Restaurant in Ottawa.
Jackie Sapienza, LSCRTA President, called the meeting to order and offered introductory remarks.
Mary Jo Farrell, membership committee chairperson, spoke about LSCRTA membership which is now at 427.
Deb Torri, IRTA Foundation committee chairperson, gave updates on foundation activities and grants.
Jackie Sapienza spoke of the importance and needs for the IRTA Legal Defense Fund, announced the filling of the LSCRTA secretarial position by Trudy Forkner and declared an opening for chairing the benefits committee. Sapienza continued with the reading of two letters showing the appreciation for the Bucks for Books program, one from Kimes School in Streator and one from La Salle Peru Township High School. She followed this with the announcement of new Sunshine Committee members Mary Jo Gilman, Jan Hauger and Maria Durden.
Chris Benson alerted the members to the Reading Council’s event at Illinois Valley Community College on March 14, with some authors present and books for sale.
Lynn Sheedy of Peru Public Library spoke about the Reading Buddies program.
Alice Joop introduced guest speaker Steve Stout who initially spoke about the Cherry Mine Disaster but then went into a lengthy, detailed and passionate retelling of the murder of three women known as the Starved Rock Murders.
The LSCRTA’s next full general meeting will be at 9 a.m. April 27 at the Dickinson House in Oglesby.
gift shop has open house March 13 and 14
St. Margaret’s Gift Shop Spring Open House will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, March 13 and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 14. Those attending can register to win a $50 gift certificate to the gift shop. New items include: spring & garden home décor, St. Patrick’s Day gifts, Easter merchandise and décor, wedding gifts, Mother’s Day items, shawls, baby clothing, toys, puzzles, plush animals, memorial stones and more.
Free tax assistance offered at local libraries
AARP volunteers are proving free income tax assistance for seniors and low-income people at La Salle Public Library on Tuesdays, Peru Public Library on Mondays and Thursdays, Mendota Senior Center on Mondays and Thursdays, Princeton Senior Center on Tuesdays and Fridays and Streator Bruce Township Hall on Wednesdays.
