Kris Marshall has said that he quit Death In Paradise because his son was “becoming too Caribbean”
The 47-year-old actor appeared on the BBC One series for four years from 2013 after taking over from Ben Miller.
Kris brought wife Hannah and children Thomas and Elsie to the island of Guadeloupe, where the show is filmed, every season for two months of shooting.
However Kris told Lorraine Kelly on Good Morning Britain: “I realised that I really had to get my son to school.
“He was becoming a bit too Caribbean – he refused to wear shoes and would only drink coconut water and eat pineapple”
He added: “He was very good on the beach but not so good with Maths and English, so I decided that it was time to get him to school. So the show had to go, really.
“But six months later I’m standing on a film set in a car park in Dagenham thinking at 4 o’clock in the morning thinking, ‘Have I made the right decision?'”
Kris’ comments left viewers stunned, with one tweeting: “Did #krismarshall just say his son was becoming too Caribbean and then just reel off a bunch of stereotypes about eating pineapple and not wearing shoes?”
While another commented: “Yeah I believe he did I won’t lie, thought that was really weird. I was just sat there the whole time like.”
But a third wrote: “Give the guy a break. Let’s not make a big deal here.”
Another responded: “I’m not making a big deal, I know what he meant. I just thought it a little bit tone deaf.”
