JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An employee was shot early Thursday morning during an armed robbery of a Jacksonville check cashing business, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Officers were called to an armed robbery of a Checks Cashed store near the intersection of Atlantic and University boulevards about 8:15 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office said. Once there, officers learned an employee was shot.
The employee was taken to an area hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. Police said that was the only person in the store when the robber entered.
The gunfire forced authorities to place two nearby schools, Ridgecrest and Love Grove Elementary, on lockdown while police searched for the shooting suspect, police said. As of 11:30 a.m., two elementary schools remained on lockdown as a precaution.
News4Jax saw officers with high-powered rifles guarding neighborhoods and businesses in the area and a K-9 helping with the search for the gunman.
Few details about the suspect were immediately available, although police described him as being 5-foot-7 to 6 feet in height. It’s unclear if there is surveillance video of the incident.
