Matt Baker made his final appearance on The One Show via video link today as he swigged on a G&T from the comfort of his own home.
The 42-year-old admitted that he was feeling very emotional on his last day as his beloved dog kept him company.
Sadly, Matt wasn’t able to say goodbye to his colleagues in the studio, who had originally planned a big celebration prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
Introducing the show today, co-host Alex Jones said: “Now many of you across the country will have had some very emotional video calls with family and friends recently. And tonight, I will be having one of my own.
“The man I’m talking about is my friend who’s been sat on this sofa for a decade. He’s joining me from his home on his last day, it’s Matt of course! Matthew!”
Matt was later shown on the screen as he sat at home cuddling his dog.
Alex continued: “This is all a bit weird, isn’t it? Because we had a big celebration planned, there was going to be nibbles, there was going to be drinks, there was going to be hangovers.
But now we’re not doing any of it because, like the rest of the country, we’re making the best of a sub-ideal situation. I mean, you said you were leaving in December and the day is finally here…”
Asked whether it was weird saying goodbye from his sofa, he said: “Yeah of course, but this not classed as essential travel if I come in and say goodbye if I can do it from here.
“So it is slightly odd but it’s lovely to be sat here with Bob and, do you know what, I’ve got a G&T here as well!”
He added: “I’m going to sit back and relax for the next half an hour.”
At the end of the show, things got emotional as Alex tried to stem the tears.
“I’ve loved every single second of it,” Matt said emotionally. “Thank you for everything.”
“Good luck for everything in the future,” Alex replied. “It just feels so odd… I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
She added, sounding choked up: “You’ve given everything to this show for the last 10 years.”
Matt tearfully confirmed back in December that he would be leaving the programme after nine years to spend more time with his family.
Despite three months passing since his announcement, co-host Alex has revealed that the crew are struggling to find the perfect person to replace Matt.
Speaking to The Sun’s TV Mag, the 43-year-old said: “It’s very sad. From the first day in March, I’ve been up every night thinking about it. We’ve sat next to each other for nearly a decade.”
Alex continued: “We decided that we aren’t going to rush into a decision of who to replace him. Matt nailed it, but it’s a hard job. And it’s got to be someone I can have a laugh with.”
She explained that they would most likely have guest hosts each week over the summer.
The presenter added: “We’ve been racking our brains and there are lists and lists [of people], but I think the right person will become obvious in their own way.”
Matt announced the news that he was quitting the programme at the end of last year, saying: “I would like to take this opportunity to say that, at this time of year, I like to stop, take stock, reflect.
“The One Show has been a massive part of my life for almost a decade now and I have loved every second of being a part of it but I am going to be leaving this green sofa in the Spring.
“It’s time to give somebody else the opportunity to see how big-hearted and generous you, our One Show viewers, really are.”
Matt confirmed that he would continue working on Countryfile and BBC Sport.
